Bali Spa Review – #3 – Waroeng Djamoe Spa – Tugu Hotel

By admin On Friday, January 16, 2015 | Comments (0)

The Tugu Hotel was primarily created, so the story goes, as a home for the owners burgeoning collection of outstanding Indonesian antiquities and, as such, has no need to compete with Bali villas for rent. The hotel appeals to a more select clientele who appreciate the finer things and everywhere in the Tugu hotel the history of Indonesia bursts forth in an astonishing display of superb collectibles. The hotel lobby houses an enormous Garuda statue and the main dining room is a completely authentic early 18th Century Chinese temple, transported from Surabaya and reassembled in Canggu.

The spa, Waroeng Djamoe, is based around a traditional Javanese apothecary where oils are extracted and herbal remedies are mixed. There are five treatment rooms and each has a unique and individual theme; and therapies are matched to these. My treatment, the Balinese Mantra Massage, was conducted in the two-bed Kamar Mantra, low lit in reds with Balinese fabrics, it is a haven of tranquillity.

This massage therapy is based in traditional Balinese deep tissue and stretching; and at key moments Balinese Hindu mantras are recited. I am told that these have been specially created for the Dewa (spirit) which inhabits this room. This is the only place the mantras will work; even moving them downstairs will render them ineffectual. The highlight of the massage is the repeated application of heated oils which are applied from a selection of spices and roots, bundled up in cotton and rubbed over the whole body. These are very hot and the effect is divine! The massage itself is expertly performed and the aroma is heaven scent! The treatment finishes with a special traditional Balinese blessing, again appealing to the spirits at this precise location and is a lovely way to end.

The Tugu hotel is bordered on one side by Canggu Beach and surrounded by rice paddies on the other sides. They welcome outside guests to the spa from Bali villas for rent and there are plenty locally. Canggu is a good place to stay, a little distance from the bustle of more developed tourist locations but still close enough to easily nip into town for a meal or a night out. Desa Seni is situated on the recently constructed road from Seminyak to the Canggu Club and many Bali villas for rent have sprung up along the way. Bali villas for rent offer great value for money, especially when travelling with a group of friends or your family. Wherever you stay, a treatment at Waroeng Djamoe Spa is likely to be one of the highlights of your visit to Bali.
