Bali Spa Review – #2 – Rumah Marapu at Desa Seni

By admin On Friday, January 9, 2015 | Comments (0)

From the moment you arrive at Desa Seni you know you are in for something special. Created by long-term Bali residents, it is a celebration of the best of Indonesian village life and is arranged as a village with examples of architecture from all over the archipelago. Gardens and lawns are well manicured without becoming twee and in between the lawns and houses lie organic vegetable and herb plots which supply most of the needs of the kitchen. The focus of Desa Seni is healing with yoga sessions and courses running through the day and regular retreats covering a range of healthy and holistic practices.

Everywhere there is a sense of ‘things just right’ and so it is with Rumah Merapu, the Desa Seni spa which is set in a classic Javanese ‘Joglo’ bungalow, made from thick teak planks, which creates a cool inner environment. Staff are waiting with big smiles and warm welcomes and the guest is ushered into the treatment room with no delay.

The chosen package is the Crystal Salt Scrub which begins with the Desa Seni Signature Massage. This is divine; combining techniques from several disciplines with deep tissue stimulation along muscles and tendons. My masseuse gently bends and caresses me stretching tired ligaments till just tight enough and then giving me the bliss of release. Then my body is coated with sea salt which is then scrubbed off and a yogurt / honey mask is applied from head to toe. The treatment finishes with a piping hot shower and a pot of Lemon Ginger Tea but I wished it could have gone on for at least another hour or two! This is a transcendental massage given and received with love and a deep empathic connection suited to the serene environment of Desa Seni.

Outside guests from other Bali villa rentals are welcome to book sessions for the spa and many people attend the yoga sessions who are not Desa Seni guests. There are many Bali villas for rent nearby and many people walk or cycle to classes. Bali villa rentals offer an attractive alternative to a traditional hotel holidays and the typical Bali villa rent is equivalent to the price of one or two moderately priced hotel rooms.

This is a spa built and furnished with Love. Facilities are first rate without being overstated and the private bathroom adjoining the treatment room would sit well in any Bali villa.
