Villa Kirana
The Villa
The beautiful Villa Kirana, set in a magnificent location in the heart of Bali, provides accommodation for up to ten people, offering a captivating blend of luxury, recreation and privacy. The five bedroom villa, together with its interior and gardens, is a masterpiece, designed by famous landscape architect Made Wijaya and his acclaimed team - including the prominent Balinese architect I Gusti Sarjana - at PT Wijaya. The style is neo-colonial, shaped by the Dutch baronial guesthouses that were to be found in the Malay hill stations. The property was not built for business purposes; instead it is the realisation of a dream, a genuine home, designed to accommodate and fulfil the needs of a western family who take their holidays in Bali. The tranquil gardens cascade into a steep ravine towards the fast flowing Ayung River, and the unbroken views across the valley of terracedrice fields, verdant jungle and the, sometimes shy, volcanoes are amongs the best in the world.
Villa Kirana Living
THE APPROACH to Villa Kirana is through the traditional Balinese village of Banjar Baung; a floral, fretwork iron gate leads into a large cobbled courtyard with a sheltered parking area. The central stonewalled tower houses the 'Porte Cochere', a grand archway boasting a unique metal sculpture by Pintor Sirait poised above a pair of impressive mahogany doors. Set in a serene tropical water garden, the villa is composed of a series of open pavilions linked by covered walkways.
Wooden pillars support the thatched roof that extends towards the SALON. The sliding glass doors and louvre shutters in this elegant living room allow cool breezes to permeate during the day giving it the feeling of an open garden room, but the clever design also provides air-conditioned comfort in the evenings. This spacious room comprises a blend of stone and timber, and the two sitting areas each contain a comfortable three-piece suite and coffee table. Paintings by Norbert Ivanyi and Ugo Untoro adorn the walls and a Bose sound system together with a collection of CDs provides the musical entertainment.
The salon extends to a paved patio area beside the pool, flanked by trickling waterfalls, flowering shrubs, and a deep pink bougainvillea hedge.
The VALLEY VIEW MASTER SUITE, air-conditioned and furnished with a king sized bed, a small desk, and a multipurpose wardrobe that houses a satellite connected TV & VCD/DVD player. Similar in concept to the salon, the design of this room also allows the glass doors and shuttered windows to be opened up to create a fresh, open-air atmosphere, cooled by the central ceiling fan. There is a spacious en-suite marble bathroom with 'His and Hers' oval washbasins beneath oval mirrors, a powerful shower and a wooden seated toilet under a decorative ceiling. The timber-panelled walls of the suite, tinted in a delicate blue wash, exude a peaceful ambience. This is further enhanced by a magnificent deck - accessed through sliding glass doors - that literally overhangs the jungle and the Ayung River in the deep valley below. A cushioned daybed provides the facility for complete relaxation, and a small round table with chairs offers an alternative dining area. From here you can enjoy beautiful sunsets and spectacular views, accompanied by the sounds of cicadas, frogs and the constant murmur of the river.
On the opposite side of the pool is another stone and timber house, resting on honey-coloured jackfruit stilts and sandstone plinths characterising whimsical amphibious creatures carved by the Ubud-born artist Wayan Cemul. The STUDY GUEST-ROOM is cozy, air-conditioned and snug, containing an intricately carved Chinese canopied bed with a 200x150-cm mattress strewn with cushions. Dark turquoise walls, traditional Ikat fabric, porcelain table lamps, a cane chair, a glass cupboard equipped with a good selection of board games and books, and a fiery Moroccan rug completes the picture. Next door, serving the guestroom and the pool, is a washroom, shower and toilet approached through antique doors.Stencilled borders and humorous artwork by Murniasih decorate the walls.
A walk through the garden leads past a romantic pergola supported by living tree trunks and dripping in lilac thunbergia flowers.Stepping-stones on a pebbled pathway escort you around a neat lawn bordered by ferns and 'Banana Paradise' red heliconia. Moss encrusted steps ascend towards a raised balé, with a conical thatched roof and a cushioned sofa, providing a shady retreat.
Smooth river boulders form a staircase and stepping-stones across the lotus pond to a splendid colonnaded cloister boasting flying buttresses. At one end of this is the air-conditioned COURTYARD GUEST SUITE furnished with a king sized bed, more Moroccan Berber rugs, and satellite connected TV & VCD/DVD player. The suite features charming shuttered windows and primitive style woodcarvings. A small, private, walled courtyard with mature trees is accessed from french windows, and a fretwork door leads to a cool open-air bathroom and toilet. Here you can enjoy an al-fresco shower, or freshen up at the brass sink set in a green marble surround.
Pintor Sirait's metal staircase, walkway and bridge leads up to the POOL VIEW MASTER SUITE, where a fine painting of Saraswati by Ian Van Werringen hangs above twin beds that can also be converted into a large double bed. A decorative centrepiece on the timber ceiling, and the cream tinged wood panelled walls enhance the tasteful décor; air-conditioning provides additional comfort, and the satellite connected TV & VCD/DVD player provides the entertainment. The theme continues into the en-suite bathroom facilitating a toilet, shower, and a marble washstand on wooden legs, and embellished with stencilled walls and pair of glass lamps protruding from a shell shaped plinths. The suite opens out on to another wonderful wooden deck, furnished with a comfortable cushioned daybed and offering a panoramic view overlooking the pool, garden, and distant terraced rice fields and jungle.
Next-door is the BUDDHA GUEST SUITE, reminiscent of a wooden chalet. Lamps shaped like flower buds dangle above chunky solid wood tables, an Ikat covered stool sits at the end of the king sized bed, and three Moroccan rugs soften the floor. The room is air-conditioned and there is also a satellite connected TV & VCD/DVD player. The en-suite bathroom is comprised of separate chambers with a toilet; glass enclosed shower, and brass sink in a marble unit.
Location
Villa Kirana is located on the spectacular Sayan Ridge, surrounded by jungle deep within the heart of Bali, and yet only ten minutes drive from the famous, cultural town of Ubud. The property is perched on the edge of the deep Ayung river gorge, with breathtaking views of emerald rice fields, coconut palms, and lush tropical vegetation against a mountainous backdrop. It is situated 500 metres south of the Four Seasons Ubud Hotel, and just over one hour's drive from Bali's international airport.
The remarkable town of Ubud is Bali's centre for fine arts, dance and music. Ever since the German painter, Walter Spies, made his home here in the 1930s, the town has been a haven for both local and European artists, writers and bohemians. Ubud is now a magnet for art collectors, connoisseurs, celebrities, mystics, and people who are actively involved in art, nature, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism and alternative healing. Some have even adopted the area as their own home. Meanwhile, the surrounding villages are home to Bali's most accomplished painters, dancers, musicians and carvers.
Ubud is the perfect area to use as a base when you are visiting Bali, especially if you are looking for culture, nature and inspiration. The town is surrounded by most of the features that draw people to this unique and beautiful island - magnificent terraced rice fields, traditional villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples, palaces, and rivers. Its central location makes it very easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and all of the major attractions. Ubud is located 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range; this gives it a cool, pleasant climate and glorious night skies. Fresher than the southern coastal regions of Bali, there are fewer mosquitoes and flies in this area.
Ubud is a wonderful place for shopping. The shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, gold, silver, jewellery, woodcarvings, fabrics, clothing, pottery, batik, paintings, metalwork, and antiques. There are many, well-presented, cultural performances staged in the town, in particular the Hindu epic, the Ramayana; also the Kecak dance, the fire dance, the monkey dance and the Legong dance. There are numerous museums and art galleries around the town, featuring traditional and modern work including paintings, ceramics, carvings, sculpture, batik, weaving and photography. The market, in the centre of the town is open every day selling handicrafts, garments, spices and foods. The countryside around Ubud is particularly beautiful, with an abundance of trails leading through the peaceful rice fields and offering memorable walks that will bring you close to nature.
